Day 1
Monday, 3 September 2018
Workshop 1 (a-i)
French console table, by Elga Koster.
This lovely table dates from 1810. It has tapered fluted legs with spade feet, a large central drawer and a narrow drawer on each side, with a bottom shelf. The top is made from stone.
Students will learn how to shape the legs using a jig and overhead pin routing. The legs will be fluted on the mill. The curved side pieces will be built up from different colours of wood. After assembling the carcass without the legs, the side pieces will be pin routed in a jig to make the curve. Students will learn how to do the inlay that goes right around the bottom edge of the carcass and on the edges of the drawer fronts.
The stone top will be made from Kenyan Kisii stone. This stone is soft and easy to work with, using the same tools as for wood. The curved edge on the stone top and wooden shelf will be pin routed in a jig. Students will then learn how to put a nice moulded edge on it, using a homemade router bit.
The price for the stone top will depend on the current price of the stone, and whether students would like an extra piece to take home with them to play with, and is therefore not included in the kit price.

With this project we will assemble a porcelain doll using gluing techniques, then dress her in a simple cotton outfit, with very little sewing required and finish her off by adding some hair and a silk ribbon bow.
Although this doll is from porcelain, the idea is to make her look like a cloth or rag doll. The only real skills required are neat gluing and a steady hand, as well as a few basic tools.
Students will be offered different choices of coordinating fabrics closer to the time of the convention.
