Class 25 (a) and (b). Open book, by Barbara Brear.
Students will make a fully sewn open book. You will have a choice of the inside spread – a beautiful illuminated manuscript or a page from Leonardo’s manuscript. The cover will be half bound - marbled paper with a leather spine and corners. If time allows we will add a gold tooling detail on the spine. The book is glued into an open position giving the satisfying profile of a book with pages lying open, heavily.
The techniques taught will allow you to make many more of your own fully sewn books with your own choice of image on the inside pages. The marbled papers are very fine to give an in scale-finish. The leather used for the spine and corners is so thin that it is easy to work with allowing you to produce neat corners.
Students will complete the text block in the first session and then make the cover in the second session and finally join the text block to the cover and glue open the pages to give the desired profile.
A steady hand and good eyesight (or good glasses) are necessary for the sewing but, for the rest, all you need is an ability to listen and follow instructions. Completion is likely.
